South Africa's Water Challenge

Water is our most precious resource and must be conserved. Currently, South Africa’s national non-revenue water is estimated to be between 39% and 47%. This means nearly half of all treated municipal water is lost to leaks, pipe bursts, or unbilled consumption before it can generate revenue.

Maintaining extensive water infrastructure is a complex challenge. Unavoidable pressure fluctuations occur, and underground leaks can remain undetected for months. Funding the necessary maintenance and upgrade programs requires significant capital, which often necessitates tariff increases and additional levies for paying residents to bridge the gap.

Another factor that impacts the fiscus is low-income households, who are exempt from paying for their water. Unfortunately, when consumers receive water free of charge, they often fail to see its value, and have no incentive to repair leaks, or use water sparingly.

The impact is substantial: a single leaky pipe left undetected for three months can waste up to 850,000 liters of water. This not only strains the municipal supply but also places residents who rely on interim meter readings at a high risk for unexpected, excessive water charges once actual readings are eventually taken.

Managing Water with a Smart Reader

 1. Install a Smart Reader            â€‹

The Davis & Deale Smart reader is compatible with all types of mechanical meters.  Consumers are able to plug the reader directly into their municipal meter - no plumbing required. For best results, consumers are advised to purchase a separate, above-ground meter box, which should be located as close to the property boundary as possible.

Once the reader has been installed, it reads the meter hourly, and sends the data to the platform, where the consumer is able to monitor it.

  2. Manage Water in Real Time, using the Valve IQ Platform

Users are able to access daily, weekly, monthly, and annual water usage reports. Receive a WhatsApp alert when water use spikes, runs continuously, or exceeds the pre-set limit. In the case of a leak, the platform alerts the user, so that a plumber can be dispatched.
The platform also offers hourly graphs, providing information on exactly when the leak started. Being able to access the platform enables users to compare their usage to their water bill, and query charges with the municipality before they escalate.

Platform Costs

Once you have your reader, you can view and manage your water on the platform for R40.00 per month. This fee covers your Sigfox or Vodacom NB-IoT data connection, as well as the support, redundancy and security costs to keep our platform running securely.
